Role Of Minerals In The Body
Minerals can be described as the substances that are inorganic in nature and are mostly found in rocks and the soil. They are necessary for the body for it to function well. One gets these important minerals from the plants that we eat. The plants are a source of this minerals since they absorbed by the plant from the soil. Animal meat is also a great source since the animals normally graze on these plants that have these minerals.
Here are some of the role of minerals in the body
Healthy bones and teeth
The skeleton plays the role of providing protection, motility, and support for the whole body. It also serves as a store for minerals and nutrients. Bones appear very hard, but the truth is the bones are always being reabsorbed and being reformed by the body. Minerals are a lattice architecture of one’s bones. Calcium is the one mineral that is mostly found in the bones and also the blood. When coupled with magnesium and phosphorus it makes the bones denser and stronger. The minerals are also important for having strong and healthy teeth. Having low calcium levels leads to a disease called osteoporosis which is wasting away of bones making weaker. This increases the risk of breaking limbs. Milk is mostly found in milk and dairy products. It is also found in bony fish and leafy vegetables. Taking these foods will ensure that you enjoy playing with your family without ending up with fractures.
Production of energy
Oxygen is a necessary ingredient for the production of energy that will enhance the functioning of the body. The red blood cells serve as the carriers of oxygen to the cells for the production of energy. For red blood cells to carry oxygen, they should have an iron component to enable oxygen to attach itself for transportation. This makes iron a necessary mineral in the body. Lack of iron causes anemia which is associated with being weak and fatigued. Iron is mostly found in blood, but it is stored in the liver, spleen, and muscles. One should ensure they have this mineral in abundance so that they do not become too weak or fatigued to spend time with their family.
Functioning of the nerves and muscles
Potassium is necessary for the body for the proper functioning of the nervous system. It is found in tomatoes, green vegetables, legumes and citrus fruits. This mineral also helps with maintaining the right water balance in the nerves and cells. Without potassium, the body will be unable to generate impulses to help in body movement, and even the other organs working by contraction and flexing will not be able to function.
Proper immunity
Minerals in the body are needed in the body in different quantities. Calcium is needed in large quantities while some minerals like zinc are needed in very little quantities. Zinc is a necessary mineral in strengthening the immunity of the body, healing of wounds and repairing of cells. It is found in meat and legumes such as beans or lentils.
When one takes mineral rich foods, they become healthy and have more time to spend with their family and friends.…
